It might not be widely known that 8 million metric tons of plastic enters the ocean every year. Plastics are broken down to masterpieces and fall into ocean by sun rays, salt water and waves but never decompose, and become the major threat to fish and other marine life. It is thus a challenge to dispose it off.
Vietnam is a country with a long coastline, large number of islands and gulfs, so pollution of the marine environment is becoming a matter of social concern. Halong Bay is one of the famous places with the breath taking beauty, which recognized by the whole world as well as a destination not to be missed if coming to Vietnam. However, there is a sad reality that the bay is suffering 7 tons of waste every day and most of it is plastic for various reasons such as economic development, large number of tourists etc.
Sealife Group – one of the first overnight cruise operator in Halong Bay, is really nervous about the ocean in general and the Vietnam’s World Heritage – Halong Bay in particular. We consider and have a strong attachment to the bay as our home. With Sealife Group, our vital goal is preserving the marine environment as well as business development, and we believe we have to act responsibly.
Aware of the importance of this ocean pollution, we are launching a campaign which is named “WE CHOOSE THE BAY” to propagate and enhance our employees as well as our customer awareness to protect the environment of Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay in every single trip.
How does the campaign work?
We build and execute the internal and external activities to support the campaign #sealifegroupsaynotosingleuseplastic, #halongbaywithoutplastic, #protectourbay as following:
The first and the most important step towards beating plastic pollution is to avoid the usage of plastic products. Instead of using the plastic bottle of water in the room, we replace to the glass bottle. Likewise, we limit the supply of plastic water bottles when taking guests to the attractions and gradually switch to using glass bottle or even stop providing water to customers until returning to the cruise. We also deny to use the straw for all drinking, replace by the one which is made under another material and can reuse.
Moreover, we organize the training course to share with staffs how to separate waste so it can be process correctly, properly and easily. Every Sunday, there will be a periodic garbage collection and clean up the bay campaign with the participation of all staff and visitors. This can be our contribution towards decreasing the plastic waste and bringing down plastic pollution.
It is time for us to stand united to fight the plastic pollution. If each one of us aware and follow strictly to beat ocean plastic pollution then we can certainly bring down the pollution level to a large extent.
Sealife Group choose the bay!
